Youth Development Fund - Bhutan

Why?

To ensure that Bhutan has a national financing mechanism to sustain youth development programming which is of paramount importance to policy makers.

When?

Acutely conscious of the challenges facing Bhutan’s youth, His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck declared that a trust fund should be established to support youth projects and programmes during a meeting with the Department of Education on 3 November 1998. Shortly thereafter the Youth Development Fund was launched on 16 June 1999 by Her Majesty Ashi Tshering Pem Wangchuck.

For Whom?

Estimates place 59% of Bhutanese under the age of 24 and 21% between ages 10 and 19. Target groups include the disabled, juvenile delinquents, out of school youth, school leavers and economically disadvantaged youth. Project proponents have to be local organizations / institutions having the mandate to undertake development work.

For What?

The YDF provides financial support for youth development activities like scouting, games and sports, basic skills and vocational training, advocacy, research and education.

Initial Capital

One million dollars from the Royal Government of Bhutan.
